Students’ Vocabulary Learning Strategies of Discovery and Consolidation in Malaysian Primary School English Language Classrooms

A good grasp of vocabulary enables language learners to articulate, comprehend and communicate ideas concepts effectively. For whose first is not English, mastering knowledge in terms the breadth depth challenging needs start at a young age through use various strategies. The lack English would demotivate even result abandoning efforts learn language. Therefore, it important that know are able five strategies, which include determination, social, cognitive, memory, metacognitive strategies vocabulary. Determination social discovery category, while consolidation category. This study aims determine learning used by 132 Year Five primary school students two urban National Type Chinese schools Sarawak. It investigated these used, how frequently they them, their reasons for preferring particular Data were collected from classrooms each questionnaire individual interview. Questionnaire results analysed descriptively mean scores standard deviation interview responses coded, categorised using thematic analysis. findings suggest employed moderate all cognitive involved mechanical approaches most students.
